Magus Journeys

Step into Egypt’s enduring mysteries

Mags Mackean

I have spent much of my life exploring landscapes, stories and the transformative space where the two meet.

For over twenty years, I have worked as a guide, writer, speaker and former BBC journalist, accompanying people through places that invite a deeper encounter with history, culture and themselves. Whether leading educational journeys across Britain, Ireland and Europe, training as a wilderness rites of passage guide on Dartmoor, or returning to Egypt’s temples and deserts, I remain fascinated by the ways landscapes mirror our inner lives and serve as mythic maps through times of change.

My own path has rarely been straightforward. After leaving my career in broadcasting, I pursued adventure, travelling from high mountains to remote corners of the world. A humbling experience on an ice wall in New Zealand revealed that lasting transformation is rarely found through achievement alone. Fulfilment, I discovered, is primarily an inward journey.

That realisation led me to the Amazon, where I trained and worked alongside traditional healers and immersed myself in the world of medicinal plants. These experiences became the foundation of my second book, *The Upside Down Mountain*, a story about learning to descend rather than endlessly climb. My path has also taken me into the world of the endangered white lions of South Africa and into the company of traditional healers and Andean shamans. The essential thread running through all these experiences is the medicine of land and belonging. Planet Earth is the Mothership.

What continues to inspire me is the opportunity to explore life’s rich mystery alongside others. Again and again, I have witnessed how journeys, landscapes and stories can reconnect people with forgotten parts of themselves. I believe that every culture, every place and every life is shaped by the stories it tells. Change the story, and the world changes with it.

I live in Bristol with my collie Jack Russell cross, Rex, and enjoy setting off in our microvan, Queenie. Egypt has continually called me back since my first visit in 2011. Despite growing up by the coast, it is the desert that most deeply feeds my thirst, while the ancient sites reveal something new with every return. Above all, the warmth and generosity of Egypt’s people make me feel fully at home.

I am a professional astrologer, teacher, author and pilgrimage guide, and have spent more than thirty years working as a consulting astrologer. I founded the Kairos School of Astrology and, in 2018, published my book *Your Zodiac Soul*. My work has always been rooted in the lived, experiential side of astrology: not simply as a system of interpretation, but as a living language that can deepen our relationship with soul, symbol and the cosmos.

Over the years, I became especially drawn to creative and embodied approaches to astrology. This led me to pioneer forms of astrodrama and astrological theatre, exploring how planetary archetypes can be experienced through story, movement, imagination and dialogue. More recently, this work found expression in *The Planetary Dialogues*, a poetic collaboration coauthored with Andreea Bradu and published in June 2026.

For many years, I have guided astrologically inspired pilgrimages to sacred sites around the world. More recently, I have been leading journeys through ancient Egypt, exploring its celestial wisdom and star lore.

My path with astrology truly began in 1990, during a profound encounter beneath the night sky that completely changed the direction of my life. In that moment, astrology ceased to be an abstract subject and became something deeply alive and sacred to me. Since then, I have devoted myself to its study, practice and teaching.

I have also felt a long and mysterious connection with Egypt. That relationship deepened profoundly in 2011 during an experience inside the King’s Chamber of the Great Pyramid. While chanting there, I underwent a powerful mystical experience accompanied by a series of strange phenomena beyond my rational understanding. From that moment onwards, the presence and power of Mother Egypt began to weave itself more deeply through my life. That sense of mystery and magic continues to inspire my teaching, my pilgrimages and my understanding of the ancient world.

I was born in a small village about fifteen kilometres north of Luxor. My parents and I shared a deep connection with a blessed woman who lived on Luxor’s West Bank. She was blind, yet she saw through her “third eye”. Her name was Dai (ضي), which means “light”.

When I was born, Dai asked my parents to bring me to her, and as I grew up, a strong bond developed between us. Whenever we visited Luxor as a family, I would go to see her. Together, we would take the ferry across to the East Bank and sit beside Luxor Temple.

As a child, I loved playing hide and seek among the ancient stones. Once, I fell asleep inside a small tunnel and my parents could not find me. It was a very long night for them, though not for me. Eventually, a temple guard found me safe and sleeping.

I have always felt that Luxor is my true home, and Karnak my beloved temple. While other children spent their pocket money on sweets or candles, I saved mine to buy tickets to the temples.

My parents hoped that I would become a doctor or an engineer, but my dream was different. I wanted to master English so that I could connect with travellers drawn to Egypt’s sacred sites and share what I felt so deeply in my heart. While studying at university, I also worked in a papyrus museum, where I had the opportunity to study many of the celebrated scenes carved upon temple and tomb walls.

I worked hard to complete my studies and qualify as a licensed guide. I love to call myself a Kemetologist. To share with guests the spiritual life of the temples and the wisdom of the ancient ones feels like a true gift.
